Rafael Nadal was born on 3 June 1986 in Manacor, Mallorca, to Ana María Parera Femenías and Sebastián Nadal Homar. His uncle Toni Nadal introduced him to tennis at age three, and another uncle, Miguel Ángel Nadal, was a professional footballer. As a child, Nadal idolized Ronaldo and initially played football before choosing tennis after winning the Open Super 12 in 1998. He turned professional at age 14 in 2001 and won his first ATP match at age 15 in Mallorca in 2002.

Nadal won his first major title at the 2005 French Open and became world No. 1 in 2008 after defeating Roger Federer in a historic Wimbledon final. He completed a career Grand Slam at the 2010 US Open, becoming the youngest man in the Open Era to do so at age 24. Nadal won 22 major singles titles, including a record 14 French Opens, and 36 Masters titles. He also won two Olympic gold medals and led Spain to five Davis Cup titles. He retired after playing for Spain in the 2024 Davis Cup Finals.
